extra dimensions (via arstechnica)

Kaluza-Klein theory is a dimensional extension of Einstein's 4D theory of general relativity. It is commonly regarded as a unified classical theory of gravitational (spin-2), electromagnetic (spin-1) and scalar (spin-0) interactions. In its non-compactified incarnation (also known as Induced Matter or Space-Time-Matter theory), the coordinate dependence of various physical and geometrical quantities is unrestricted; i.e. the fifth dimension is regarded as "real". This allows one to define the material properties of the 4D universe in term of 5D geometrical objects, which implies that what we traditionally view as matter is really just a manifestation of higher-dimensional geometry.

multidimensional clustering (via osnews)

A special kind of clustering is the so called multidimensional clustering. Records are not clustered with respect to one single attribute, but several attributes are used to get cluster order. The goal is to store the records in an order on disk so that spatial proximity is preserved, thereby storing spatially adjacent records on the same disk pages. To achieve this, a discrete partitioning of the multidimensional data space must be provided. This problem (space filling curves) is discussed since more than 100 years. The z curve (Lebesgue curver) and Hilbert curve are known space filling curves with practical significance.

the neu incident

Let's assume, in a purely hypothetical fashion, that someone is interested with the concept of Googlebombing in general. Perhaps, in their field of study, they see Google as a truly successful and non-biological neuroprosthesis: you provide it with (input|data|stimulus) and it, in return, provides you with a great deal of information on that input. That information can help form one's opinion of the subject. That information can be controlled to help one form a positive or negative opinion of the subject.1

[...]

1Take, for example, Scientology, a quasi-religious organization whose litigious nature has allowed it to censor criticism by forcing sites like google.com and archive.org to remove the sites of their detractors from search results. [gaslighted]

the patient labyrinth

See, in the Philip K. Dick story "War Game," (SPOILERS!!) Gandymede successfully embarks on a campaign to cause the economic collapse of Earth. Their strategy is to brainwash Terran kids by selling them this Monopoly-like board game where the objective is to give away your money and securities as quickly as possible. Having read the story when I was young, I guess I grew up believing in the ability of game-actions to shape one's actions in the real world.

[...]

I firmly believe in the gift-based economy and I wanted to get more practice in doing nice things for people. But then someone handed me a bottle of absinthe at a party and everything turned to hell. I blew all my money on the stuff and then started wandering around the rural areas scavenging for plants I could sell in the city, for the express purpose of buying more of the absinthe to drink by myself. I logged off when I realized this was going on. But it is a little spooky. [game neverending]
