man conquers space

Half a century ago space exploration was the ultimate adventure and a team headed by Wernher von Braun dreamed about it for Colliers Magazine. Their vision of the future to come was too optimistic though and we haven't made to Mars yet. Now the dreamers are some people in Australia trying to produce Man Conquers Space, a documentary based on the premise that all that had been proposed in the early 1950's in Colliers actually came to pass - and sooner than they expected.

rez

There's a game out on PS2 and Dreamcast at the moment (although not for much longer on the latter) called Rez, which is said to enduce endorphin rushes through sound and graphics. The first time you play/see it it looks and sounds truly amazing, then it gets a bit boring. However, I stuck it out and I've been playing it on and off for about three months now, and tonight I finally managed to complete it and get an alternative ending. The effect was completely unlike anything I've ever felt before, a rush of sheer emotion so intense I burst out in tears. It was quite possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen and I honestly can't describe it (although I'm sure someone else will).

restoration works wonders on classic 'metropolis'

The search for the missing footage from "Metropolis" has become one of the holy grails of the cinema, along with the lost original print of "Greed" and the missing ending from Orson Welles' "The Magnificent Ambersons." Now a new print has been devised that is as close to the original as will probably ever be possible. It represents about 79 percent of the film, up from the 56 percent of the first shortened version.

italian neo-realism revisited in visconti's restored 'rocco'

It is good to have a restored version of "Rocco," which in fact gathered a few votes in the recent Sight & Sound poll of the world's greatest films. But the most notably and painfully missing Visconti title is still "The Leopard." A 205-minute epic widely considered a masterpiece, it was mercilessly hacked to 165 minutes by its U.S. distributor, 20th Century Fox. It's an ideal candidate for DVD, but I understand the studio feels there is no demand. Of course by botching the original release it diminished any possible demand. Still, copies of the out-of-print VHS tape are in high demand on eBay. It was the performance he was proudest of, Lancaster once told me.

saw thirteen conversations about one thing, sort of like a cross between happiness and the five senses or like a neil labute movie or series of one acts if he had wanted to show (instead of shock) a progression of redemption (vs the irredeemable) or something, ... which is a good thing, i think!

there were some visual flourishes (and title tags :) that i thought were kind of distracting at first, like it was hard to tell if they were clever, gimmicky or just out of place, but i guess in the end it mostly worked overall. like if i were a filmmaker (and had talent :) i'm pretty sure it'd be hard to resist (flourishes) cuz um, they lend a cinematic quality or stylistic cohesion or some sensibility that brings it all together! beautifully, i might add :) i dunno :)

regardless, i'm with ebert looking forward to whatever it is the sprecher sisters have in store next :) and uh, if y'all are listening and are taking requests please make it like a whit stillman/david mamet crossover! hope! me!

i was never outraged by the fact that they dared to do what they shouldn't or couldn't, as much as i was fascinated that they could or can.
